Double Heart - Crochet Pattern

February 11, 2022

This adorable double heart is double love. Give it to someone extra special or make it for your own joy.

Double Heart - Crochet Pattern

The heart ornament is made in one piece, so there is no sewing the parts together in the end.

Yarn and hook

Choose yarn as you would for amigurumi. Crocheting a little tight will benefit the shape. I recommend a small hook size 2.25-3mm (US: B1-D3, UK 13-11).

I used hook size 3mm (US: C/2-D/3, UK 11) and yarn Lane Cervinia Sicilia - 123.4m/50gr (135yrd/1.76oz). I should have made it a little tighter, to be sure it will hold the shape when hanging in a window.

Double Heart Pattern

The pattern should work for beginners as well as experienced crocheters.
With the recommended hook size the double heart will be less than 10cm (4") wide.

Abbreviations (US terms)
ss = slip stitch
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
YO = yarn over
( ) x7 = Repeat the instructions in the parentheses as many times as it says.

Notes
The ring will be slightly twisted at the beginning and end of each round - especially if you work into the back bumps like me. It's not very important to hook in at any specific point at the bottom tip of a heart. Just be persistent and hook under two strings if possible for a solid result.

Btw. Did you know, that you can avoid the ugly slip knot at the beginning of the chain row? If you haven't tried it yet, look at how to Make an Invisible Slip Knot.

Little Heart

Foundation
Chain 24. Join with a slip stitch to form a ring - be careful not to twist the chain row. (see notes)

I prefer to turn my work and work into the back bumps of the chains for a nicer edge. This is optional though.

ring of chains - crochet into the back bump

Little Heart Round
  1. Chain 2.
  2. 2 hdc in the base of the chain-2. (See notes)
  3. 1 hdc in each of the next 4 stitches.
  4. 2 hdc in each of the next 5 stitches (= increasing 5 times)
The middle top of the heart is made over the next 5 chains. It is like a heavy hdc/dc increase (or cluster stitch), where the last part of each stitch is finalized at the same time.
Be careful, the first stitch on the hook stays short and tight. The 3rd chain is skipped, to make the internal heart tip more distinct. Like this:

  1. Hdc: YO, insert hook into next stitch, YO and pull through once. Keep the three loops on the hook.
  2. Dc: YO, insert hook into next stitch, YO and pull through, YO and pull through two loops. (4 loops on the hook).
  3. Skip the next chain
  4. Dc: YO, insert hook into next stitch, YO and pull through, YO and pull through two loops. (5 loops on the hook).
  5. Hdc: YO, insert hook into next stitch, YO and pull through once. (7 loops on the hook)
  6. Finalize your cluster/increase with a YO and pull through all 7 stitches.

Do the first lines again in reverse order.
  1. 2 hdc in each of the next 5 stitches (= increasing 5 times)
  2. 1 hdc in each of the next 4 stitches.
  3. 2 hdc in the base of the chain-2, where this round started. (See notes)
Join with a slip stitch in the chain-2.

Reinforce the Edge
This is for a sturdier result. It will help the heart to keep its shape.
  • Chain 1.
  • Make slip stitches all the way round. (Including into the chain 1 if needed to bring you to the tip of the heart)
Don't cut the yarn. Continue immediately with the big heart part.

Big Heart

Foundation
Chain 29 (28 if you are not using the back bumps of the chain row).

Join the chain row at the top of the little heart with a slip stitch decrease. Hook in behind the reinforcement stitches for a nicer result. Like this:
  • Insert the hook into the cluster stitch (it's right before the gap), YO and pull up a loop.
  • Insert the hook into the next stitch, YO, and pull through all loops.
Tighten the loops you just pulled through if they are loose.

Make another 29 (or 28) chains.
Join the chain row to the little heart at the bottom tip of the heart with a slip stitch. (I do this behind the reinforcement stitches.)

Big Heart Round
If you hooked into the back bumps of the little heart chain row, then do that again.
  1. Chain 2.
  2. 2 dc in the base of the chain-2 where the chain row and the little heart are joined.
  3. 1 dc in each of the next 10 stitches.
  4. (2 dc in the next stitch, 1 dc in the next stitch) x 7
  5. 1 dc in each of the next 2 stitches.
Make a 4 double crochet increase (cluster) over the join, like this:
  1. Dc: YO, insert hook into next stitch, YO and pull through, YO and pull through two loops. (2 loops on the hook).
  2. Repeat. (3 loops on the hook).
  3. Skip the join
  4. Dc: YO, insert hook into next stitch, YO and pull through, YO and pull through two loops. (4 loops on the hook).
  5. Repeat. (5 loops on the hook).
  6. YO and pull through all loops on the hook
Do the first parts again in reverse order.
  1. 1 dc in each of the next 2 stitches.
  2. (1 dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch) x 7
  3. 1 dc in each of the next 10 stitches.
  4. 2 dc in the base of the chain-2 where the chain row and the little heart are joined.
Reinforce the Edge
  • Chain 1.
  • Make slip stitches all the way round.
Cut the yarn and pull the loose yarn end through the last loop. Sew in ends. Sewing through the enforces edges work well.

Crochet Heart for Valentines

Wash/Block if needed

If the crochet work is at least somewhat tight it shouldn't be necessary to stiffen the heart.

In some cases handwashing makes it look prettier, though. Handwash the heart and press out any excess water using a towel. Lay it on a flat surface, then shape it and let it dry.

Enjoy ❤
